NASCAR suspended the FireKeepers 400 until Monday, running out of time Sunday to run a race that was delayed and interrupted by rain

BROOKLYN, Mich. (AP) — NASCAR suspended the FireKeepers 400 until Monday, running out of time Sunday to run a race that was delayed and interrupted by rain.

On Lap 51 of the 200-lap Cup race, cars went to pit road to wait and see if the rain would go away in time to get at least half of the race completed to make it official and avoid having it spill over into an extra day for the second straight year at Michigan.

Former NFL player accused of urinating on passenger during Boston to Dublin flight

  • AP

A former NFL player accused of drunkenly hitting one man and urinating on another during a flight from Boston to Dublin has been arrested and charged with disorderly conduct. The Massachusetts State Police said Gosder Cherilus was arrested early Sunday after the Delta Air Lines flight returned to Logan International Airport. Cherilus, who lives near Boston, was a first-round pick of the Detroit Lions who also played for the Indianapolis Colts and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Troopers arrested the 40-year-old at the airport on charges of disorderly conduct and disturbing a flight crew. Cherilus was arraigned Monday. The Boston Globe reports that Cherilus and his attorney did not comment to reporters as they left the court.

SMU buries the painful 'death penalty' aftermath for good as its ACC debut draws near

  • By SCHUYLER DIXON - AP Sports Writer

SMU is ready to move on from the painful aftermath of the so-called death penalty as the Dallas school's debut in the Atlantic Coast Conference draws near. The Mustangs wandered in conference purgatory for nearly four decades after the NCAA shut down the program in 1987 because of recruiting violations. Alums who were embarrassed back then are forking over the money now. The ACC announcement nearly a year ago triggered $100 million in pledges in a week. Board of Trustees Chairman David Miller says his alma mater is in the midst of a “transformational opportunity.”

Matt Richardson was a Paris Olympics track cycling star for Australia and now will race for Britain

  • AP

Track cyclist Matt Richardson won three medals racing for Australia at the Paris Olympics but is now eight days later switching teams to ride for Britain. The Australian cycling federation says Richardson’s unexpected change of eligibility to the country of his birth was approved by the International Cycling Union. Australia team executive Jesse Korf says "Matt’s switch is disappointing and came as a surprise.” The 25-year-old Richardson won Olympic silvers in men’s keirin and sprint and bronze in team sprint. Richardson was born in England and says switching to Britain was “not something I decided on quickly or easily.”

Quarterback decision is crucial as Virginia and coach Tony Elliott face early tests

  • By MICHAEL PHILLIPS - Associated Press

Tony Muskett and Anthony Colandrea continue to battle to be Virginia's quarterback, but expectations are low no matter who lines up under center. The Cavaliers were picked by reporters to finish 16th in the 17-team Atlantic Coast Conference. Coach Tony Elliott figures to have little margin for error after going 6-16 in his first two seasons, with a 3-12 mark in ACC play. But he says preseason predictions always turn out to be wrong for some teams. Virginia has an unforgiving early schedule that includes visits to Wake Forest and Coastal Carolina and a home game against Maryland.

Torkelson returns to the majors, and he has a lot to prove amid another mediocre season in Detroit

  • By NOAH TRISTER - AP Baseball Writer

The Detroit Tigers haven’t made the postseason since 2014. That matches the Los Angeles Angels for baseball’s longest active drought. A lot went wrong to prolong Detroit’s rebuild. The Tigers failed to land any future standouts when trading Justin Verlander back in 2017. But even since then, Detroit has had the No. 1 overall pick in the draft twice. Neither pick did enough to change the team’s fortunes. One of them was Spencer Torkelson in 2020. He started so poorly this year he was sent down to the minors in early June. But he came back up and hit a double and a triple Saturday.

Aces coach Becky Hammon again disputes Dearica Hamby's claims of mistreatment during pregnancy

  • AP

Las Vegas coach Becky Hammon again disputed former Aces player Dearica Hamby’s claim the Aces mistreated her and traded her because of her pregnancy. “It didn't happen,” Hammon said Sunday after the Aces beat Hamby and the Los Angeles Sparks 87-71. Hamby, traded to Los Angeles in January 2023, played for the organization from 2015-22, beginning when the Aces were based in San Antonio. Hamby, who went public with her accusations last year, sued the WNBA and her former team in federal court last Monday. Hammon previously refuted the allegations, saying in May 2023 that Hamby was traded for strategic reasons, namely putting the club in position to sign likely future Hall of Famer Candace Parker.

Rookie Bo Nix strengthens his bid for the Broncos' starting QB job in a 27-2 win over the Packers

  • By ARNIE STAPLETON - AP Pro Football Writer

Rookie Bo Nix led Denver on scoring drives on both of his possessions on Sunday when the Broncos beat Green Bay 27-2. The Packers sat 31 players including all of their regular starters. Nix threw a touchdown pass to Tim Patrick and would have had another one had he not stepped over the line of scrimmage while firing a 14-yard pass to Javonte Williams. Jarrett Stidham replaced Nix with Denver ahead 10-0 in the second quarter and ran for a 9-yard TD that made it 17-0 at halftime.

  • By JOSH DUBOW - AP Pro Football Writer

Derek Carr and the New Orleans starting offense finally got going with a 95-yard touchdown drive against San Francisco’s backup defenders but the 49ers beat the Saints 16-10. Joshua Dobbs ran for a TD and Jake Moody kicked three field goals for the 49ers. The Niners were missing three starting offensive linemen, their top four receivers, their top three running backs, All-Pro tight end George Kittle and All-Pro fullback Kyle Juszczyk either because of injuries, contract disputes or rest. That left Brock Purdy playing his three series with a collection of mostly backups and the results weren’t good as the Niners generated one first down and had two three-and-outs.

Yankees and Tigers are kids for a day, mingling among Little Leaguers

The Detroit Tigers and New York Yankees were like kids again as they mingled with Little Leaguers ahead of the Major League Baseball Little League Classic on Sunday night. Aaron Judge heard steady cries of “Judge!” from kids who flocked to the Yankees slugger from the moment he stepped off the team plane to his appearance at the Little League World Series. Jazz Chisholm Jr. tossed souvenirs to pleading kids and captured the commotion on an old-school handheld video camera.
